This 1929 Ford Model A Phaeton is one of 209,943 similar cars built over the model’s four-year lifespan. This vehicle received a seven-year, ground-up restoration that was completed around 1990. Since then, this Model A has been the recipient of an AACA Grand National award in 1992, took part in two Glidden Tour revivals, and was last presented at Hershey in 2003. The Model A has its original engine and is free of rust.
POWERTRAIN
All Models A’s were delivered from the factory with Ford’s 201-cu.in. L-head inline four-cylinder engine. With a compression ratio of 4.22:1, the carbureted engine was rated by the manufacturer at 40 horsepower when new. The engine in this Model A is original to the car, having amassed 8,500 miles since a rebuild by marque specialist Dick McKee of Columbiana, Ohio. The engine starts readily without smoke, and the three-speed manual transmission operates properly. No powertrain leaks. The engine bay is stock and is clean.
EXTERIOR
The nitrocellulose lacquer paint dates to 1988 and is in overall good condition, with no swirls. There is slight paint shrinkage on the hood plus small cracks, nicks and worn areas, especially around the hood, but no dents. The phaeton top is in near-perfect condition, with side curtains and a top boot. All areas of corrosion were replaced when the Model A was restored and the car is now rust free. The running boards are straight and the brightwork is in very good condition. The windshield, wind wings and rear glass are in very good condition. All exterior lighting is operable. The underside is rust free and strongly clean.
INTERIOR
The interior was redone with original-style materials that remain in excellent condition, with no visible tears or other damage. The Model A’s floors are solid and covered by rubber mats. All instrumentation in the painted steel dashboard are functional.
CHASSIS
Regular chassis maintenance and lubrication have been performed on a regular basis. Spring covers were installed in 1992. There are no functional issues or component damage, and the mechanical drum brakes are in good operating order. The tires have covered about 200 miles since being mounted in 2019.
