The R129-series Mercedes-Benz SL that replaced the R107-series SL after 19 years of production brought a quantum leap in engineering over the older car. The new SL range was right back in the pinnacle position of luxury two-seaters. Mercedes pushed the peak further upward in 1993, offering the V12 from the big S-Class sedans in the convertible and calling it 600SL. The result was effortless acceleration from the massive torque. (The nomenclature changed in 1994, putting the “SL” before the engine designator.) The model also featured an abundance of luxury amenities, driving the price to $120,100 when new.
