Along with the official Indianapolis 500 pace car, a fleet of supporting vehicles is also created for parade duty and other race-related activities. They are referred to as festival cars, and this 50th Anniversary Edition 2003 Chevrolet Corvette convertible is number 49 of 60 produced for the 2003 race, when the Chevy SSR was the pace vehicle.
Under the hood is the original LS1 5.7-liter V-8 engine, which is backed by a four-speed automatic transmission. It starts, idles, and runs well, with no modifications, no smoke, and no known leaks. There are no known leaks, either, with the transmission, which delivers excellent shifting performance.
EXTERIOR
An Indy graphics package complements this Corvette’s Millenium Yellow exterior color, and includes a flames motif that echoes the graphic scheme of the SSR pace vehicle. The finish is in excellent condition for the car’s nearly 20-year age, although there are a couple of rock chips and a light scratch on one of the mirrors. Additionally, the convertible top is in like new condition, including its operation, along with the glass and seals. The windshield features a “CORVETTE” banner across the header and “49” identification number on the lower corner.
INTERIOR
The black leather interior is in very good original condition. There is very minimal wear on the seat covers. The carpet is in excellent condition, along with the door panels and instrument panel. All of the interior trim is intact, while the gauges, air-conditioning system, and CD audio system with Bose speakers are functional. The only known inoperable power feature is the passenger’s door lock. The car is also equipped with the 1SB equipment package, which includes a head-up display, memory package, auto-dimming mirror, and more.
CHASSIS
The chassis is rust-free, and the suspension and brake systems have been maintained in stock condition and have no issues or needs. The car wears its original, staggered 17-inch and 18-inch aluminum five-spoke wheels, which are wrapped with Hankook rubber. The wheels are free of curb rash, but show wear and some pitting.
