This 1969 MGB Convertible had a nut-and-bolt restoration in 2018, including almost $10,000 in new parts. It’s fully equipped with wire wheels, a new top, boot, interior, tonneau cover, and electric overdrive. The car is finished in Glacier White with a blue racing stripe on the bonnet.
From the outset, the MGB's well-proportioned styling was widely appreciated, as was its strong, unitary body construction and tunable, peppy four-cylinder engine. That appreciation has remained with the MGB to the present day. Automotive writer Peter Egan has said the MGB remains “permanently satisfying to drive and maintain.” The car enjoyed an 18-year production run and was the best-selling MG of all time.
POWERTRAIN
A 1.8-liter BMC “B-series” OHV inline-four power this MGB. The cast-iron engine breathes through a pair of SU carburetors and, when new, was quoted as producing 92 horsepower and 110 lb-ft of torque. An aftermarket ribbed valve cover and aluminum radiator have been installed, as well as a complete stainless-steel exhaust. There’s no smoke when starting, but the engine does leak a few drops [of oil] from the rear main seal. Engine power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with a Laycock de Normanville overdrive unit. The overdrive operates on 3rd and 4th gears, producing the effect of a six-speed transmission, which works smoothly.
EXTERIOR
The MG received its present Glacier White paint and blue racing stripe in 2017. Some very small stone chips have been touched up and the blue racing stripe is a transfer, not paint. There are no dents or scratches. During restoration, new OEM floors were installed, though the originals had minimal rust. Exterior photos don’t appear to show any evidence of serious corrosion. All the glass is reported to be original and% excellent. All lights work, including the hazards. LED headlights with angle-eyes and integrated amber signals have replaced the factory items. Further, a new black convertible top, boot, and tonneau were installed in 2018.
INTERIOR
The MG’s black “Ambla” vinyl seats are in excellent condition, and the carpet and seals were replaced in 2018. High-end walnut overlays now embellish the instrument cluster and center stack. All gauges work perfectly, though the speedometer is about 5 mph fast”due to larger tires. There is also an upgraded to a Bluetooth stereo and all-new speakers, and the heater works.
CHASSIS
This MGB received a new suspension in 2018, including bushings and shock absorbers. There is a factory-correct independent front suspension with coil springs and a live-axle rear suspension with leaf springs along with Armstrong lever-arm shock absorbers. The manual rack-and-pinion steering is straight and true; The front disc and rear drum brakes were also replaced in 2018 and have excellent feel and stopping power.
