The Model A was a highly successful model in Ford’s early history, with nearly five million examples sold from 1928 through 1931. Ford maintained its leadership position in the automotive industry not only offering a significant leap forward in technology, but by also meeting the needs and desires of its customers with a variety of body designs. Among the most desired of those body variants was the Roadster. This 1928 Ford Model A Rumble Seat Roadster was built during the Model A’s first year, and is a well-preserved older restoration. This Model A runs and drives exactly as designed. The odometer currently reads 1,918 miles.
EXTERIOR
The Dawn Gray Light body with Gunmetal Blue beltline and Straw pinstripes is well framed by the contrasting Black fenders. The paint was applied in the 1990s, and remains in good condition with a good surface gloss. Fine areas of paint bubbling are visible in the paint on the left rear fender. The convertible top is also believed to date to the 1990’s, and has some surface staining. A set of unused side curtains will be included. The dual side-mounted tires are fitted with tire covers and mirrors. A Ford Monometer winged hood ornament is fitted to the radiator. A Valco steamer trunk is fitted to the rear of the car. The leather straps on the trunk have deteriorated. The chrome finish is peeling on the right rear bumper.
INTERIOR
The seats are upholstered with brown vinyl. As an early Model A, this vehicle is fitted with a period correct red steering wheel. To share the motoring experience, this Roadster has a rumble seat, which is readily deployable for two additional guests.
POWERTRAIN
Ford’s 201-cubic-inch L-head inline-four featured a 4.22:1 compression ratio and was rated at a peak of 40 horsepower at just 2,200 rpm with the full torque of 128 pound-feet at only 1,000 rpm. The Model A engine has proven to be a reliable powerplant over the years. The engine in this Model A was rebuilt in 2012 and operates as designed.
CHASSIS
There are no issues with the suspension or brakes. The Straw painted wire wheels and Goodyear tires are in good condition. The age of the tires is not known. No rust is visible on the undercarriage.
