This restored 1910 Maxwell AA Runabout was built in Tarrytown, New York, by the Maxwell-Briscoe Corporation. Featuring several novel designs, such as a boxer-twin engine, a two-speed planetary gearbox and shaft drive, Jonathan Maxwell’s innovative AA family of “horseless carriages” brought the company much fortune.
The original two-cylinder engine in this AA Runabout runs well and features a valve-in-block design and external valvetrain components. The 101-cu.in. liquid-cooled “Boxer” performs well and leaks oil considerably, which is inherent to its externally lubricated design. The Black leather seat remains original from 1910 and shows seam separation along the driver’s backrest with the horsehair backing being exposed. The leather has not been treated to any preservatives in order to show its current and true condition. Underpinning this 1910 Maxwell AA Runabout are four leaf springs and beam axles with the rear driving the wheels. The braking system consists of two external rear drum brakes that are mechanically activated by the conventional foot lever. The wooden-spoke wheels with steel rims are matched with 28 x 3.0 Coker Classic tube-type tires that are molded in white.
Relive the adventurous early days of the automobile with this brass-era 1910 Maxwell AA Runabout that brings true definition to the term “analog driving experience.”
