All-new for 1969, the Pontiac Grand Prix had its own look for the first time and introduced a new era of intermediate coupes that grew in popularity in the '70s. This 1969 Pontiac Grand Prix, in yellow, gets lots of looks at car shows, with a 400 engine, an automatic transmission, and four new tires. It comes with extra wheels and tires and additional parts.
POWERTRAIN
The 400-cu.in. OHV V8 in this Pontiac is original. The engine starts easily and idles well. It wears an aftermarket aluminum intake manifold below the four-barrel carburetor and is matched with a three-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmission that was replaced in 2021. It shifts well. The only issue is an engine oil leak. The car was originally equipped with air conditioning and the bracket for it is still attached to the engine, but the compressor is not installed. Recent service includes replacement of the radiator and thermostat.
EXTERIOR
The car was painted yellow in 2010. It’s a color change from the original 86-code Claret Red with a Parchment vinyl roof, per the trim tag. The paint is in good driver quality, but there’s orange peel in the finish and a couple areas of the body were painted over. There are also a few areas of paint bubbling. There is some rust under the car. The chrome and exterior trim are in good shape. The glass is great, but the seals are showing their age. There are no leaks, but the door seals show cracks. All the exterior lights work normally.
INTERIOR
This Grand Prix’s cockpit is dressed in white vinyl, with bucket seats and a console. Like the exterior, it is in good overall condition, with some wear and needs. The driver’s seat shows wear. There are cracks and additional wear in the door panels, and the headliner is missing. There is also a split in the dash pad. The heater and air conditioning are non-operational. The radio does not work and is missing a faceplate, while aftermarket Bluetooth speakers and a four-channel amp were added. The car’s gauges are functional, but the odometer does not work and while the aftermarket oil pressure gauge works, it sometimes drips oil. Additional upgrades include LED footwell lighting.
CHASSIS
The chassis, suspension, and brakes are in good condition, with recent service including the upper control arm bushings and ball joints and replacement of the steering box in 2023. The car now drives nice and tight. The rear shocks were replaced with air shocks in 2022, while the brake master cylinder and front brakes have also been replaced, along with the fuel tank and sending unit. A set of Cooper Cobra tires was also installed in 2023 and remain in very good shape. They’re mounted on blemish-free Pontiac Rally II wheels.
